MailChimp Jungle

MailChimp customer community

An issue with Yahoo Shortcuts and email campaigns was recently brought to my attention by a small business owner. See below for details. Has anyone else experienced this?

Problem: When you send a newsetter to a customer with a Yahoo email address and the newsletter contains the name of a product that can be found on Amazon, Yahoo Shortcuts will automatically add a link to the title of the product and if your customers click on the link to read more about the product, they are taken to AMAZON to buy it, not your site.

For example, I sell books. I had listed the title of a book "Little Miss Twins" in my email newsletter, but when my husband opened it in his Yahoo account, Yahoo Shortcuts linked the title to Amazon, not my store.

Solution: Make sure you add your own links to every product mentioned in your newsletter so that Yahoo Shortcuts won't try to add their own link.

Sure enough. I sent myself a test campaign, with no links in it. All I did was mention that (your client's) book, and also the "Amazon Kindle 2." Here's what it looked like in Yahoo Mail.

FWIW, it doesn't seem like any preferential treatment is being given to Amazon, because if so, I'd have expected that Kindle link to be more direct. Just looks like a general Yahoo search is being conducted.

Seems like an interesting feature for Yahoo!Mail.

Nice to know about it, and how we should definitely place our own links if we don't want Yahoo to place theirs.

Thanks, Tanya!

My test campaign came in and the results were the same. What I did find interesting was that Yahoo shortcuts not only linked the title of the book but also the authors name.

Hmm, wonder if it'll try linking *any* name it finds. Testing now.

Very interesting. I sent myself a test campaign as well but with the server backup today I haven't received it yet but I suspect I'll discover the same thing. Thanks for checking into it Ben.

My test took about 20 mins to get to my Yahoo inbox. FYI.

Apparently, this has been live for quite some time w/Yahoo, but I've never really seen any public announcements, or any complaints until now. Interesting stuff.
